It's no secret that Anna Maria Island is a tourist destination year-round, but there are times of the year when you can visit without the massive crowds. Winter tends to be the off-season for tourists on the barrier island. Fewer crowds can be the best thing that ever happened to your getaway.

The island is home to a variety of coastal birds, as well as small mammals such as raccoons, opossums, and armadillos. However, due to the island's location and the lack of freshwater sources, alligators are not commonly found on the island itself. Alligators prefer slow-moving rivers, marshes, swamps, and lakes.

For generations, families have returned to Anna Maria Island, Florida, for its powdery white sand, abundant nature, and Old Florida small-town feel. It's no secret, but compared to more flashy Sunshine State locales, this little barrier island south of Tampa Bay feels like one.

Be cautious at all times. Never swim alone. Whenever possible, swim at a lifeguard-protected beach. On Anna Maria Island, there are two public beaches—Coquina Beach and Manatee County Public Beach—that have lifeguards present between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Summer is the busiest time of the year in AMI with families and groups of friends flocking here to soak up the sun on our gorgeous white sand beaches. There's plenty to see and do during summer, making it a great time to plan your visit.

Typically, the island depends on wells that extract water from the Floridan Aquifer. This extensive underground limestone formation underlies a significant portion of Florida and stands as a primary drinking water source for the state. The Floridan Aquifer's distinction lies in its water of high quality.

June through mid-August are also peak months. In this case, it's busy because of families traveling during their children's summer break from school. Just like the cold months, this is a more expensive time to travel to Anna Maria Island.

Most of the year, Anna Maria Island is hot and visitors can expect some degree of humidity. The best time to visit is January – March or in October because it's cooler on Anna Maria Island around then. These times of the year are also the quietest if you are looking for uncrowded beaches!

Anna Maria Island's beaches are calm and serene, with plenty of spots for visitors to relax and soak up some Florida sun. There are a handful of live music venues but there's not the wild nightlife scene you'd find in bigger cities like Tampa and St. Pete.

Bean Point is at the northernmost tip of Anna Maria. So, you'd expect it to be easy to locate. In reality, it's one of the most private and secluded areas of the island. Because it's a little off the beaten path, it's been a hidden gem for many years.
