is a live look there in berkele. this is where firefighters are at the scene of a large structure fire. this is near the waterfront on seventh and hines, just west of san pablo avenue. i want to give you a look from above. there. a short time ago and a short distance away from our traffic cameras that we have for you. okay, we don't have that, but i want to show you this video right here. you can see those flames right there shooting through the roof of that building. these are images from about two hours ago. still not clear how many businesses are impacted or whether anyone was inside that structure before the fire started. our bob redell is there. he'll have a report for us coming up in our next half hour. well as if making in the bay wasn't already hard enough for most renters, it turns out some san francisco landlords are using ai software to set rents even higher. that is, until now. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us and kris city leaders are really putting their foot down on this one. so san francisco supervisors took pretty swift action. sometimes they go back and forth between committee and different readings, but this

time they banned some ai rental software. the first time they discussed it, the software in question is by realpage and yardi. they compile landlord data to determine how high they can set a units rent, or perhaps not rent it at all. according to the information that the supervisors had to consider before the meeting. the use of that software, increased rent vacancy, and even eviction rates. and the companies have faced lawsuits in other communities across the country. now while realpage claims that not enough landlords use the software in san francisco to contribute to that alleged collusion, supervisor aaron peskin disagreed, stating at the board meeting, quote, banning algorithmic price gouging is pro-housing policy. let's build housing for renters, not for real estate investors. now, to put this into context, earlier this year, u.s. district court in tennessee, found that the two companies that operate multifamily residential

all right. thanks, jess. in prime time tonight, tune in to see the men's all around gymnastics final. then the men and women take to the water and freestyle final competitions. prime time coverage kicks off tonight at 8:00 right here on nbc. bay area. let's see how the weather is shaping up in paris for the athletes today. jessica already said it's a little better today. it sounds like it's muggy, though. kari. yes, and of course, besides the olympians, the weather is also taking center stage. we've had over the past couple of days all kinds of changes. but we know that in july and august in paris, these are the warmest months. and usually the high temperature is in the upper seconds. but yesterday we were talking about the heat wave and those temperatures in the upper 90s. so as we take a look at today's forecast and what to expect as we go into this afternoon of course they're nine hours ahead. so we're looking at that trend and more storm chances in the forecast. that's

the reason why it still feels very muggy out there. there's a lot of humidity in the air and we haven't yet broken that heat with the cold front that's on the way. so sun will set at 930 this afternoon. and then going into the evening with still some very warm temperatures and a chance of thunderstorms even into early tomorrow, we'll be watching that. eventually it will get cooler and across the bay area we're going to heat up, so i'll have more on that. mike, you have a clear drive across the golden gate bridge clear drive, and we can see the lights all the way across the span as well. but if you notice, there's kind of a blur above it. so there are some low clouds around the area. a good volume now coming southbound. no surprises, but sometimes we don't see as many headlights. we do see a little release of traffic, and i think the crew on the north side of the bridge did stop traffic up just for a couple of seconds, and that's why we just suddenly saw a little burst of traffic there. i'll keep monitoring for folks in the north bay. it's looking great. highway 37 still fine. vallejo over toward novato is the commute direction. same thing for highway four and all the way through walnut creek

are bracing for another warm up as high pressure moves from the southwest into the bay area a little bit closer. high pressure basically is what it says. it's producing a high amount of pressure on the earth. that means the air is sinking down and as we see high pressure moving in, it causes our temperatures to go up, mainly because all of the sinking air, as it sinks, it warms up, it compresses those air molecules which move faster and create more friction and also more heat. as it does so and pushes down on the earth. so when we take a look at a spot like morgan hill, our temperatures are going to be heating back up. we see that high pressure all also keeping our wind direction flowing offshore. and we don't get that nice air conditioning, our natural air conditioning coming in off of the ocean. so we are going to see our temperatures headed for the 90s going into the weekend, we'll talk about all of our microclimates and take a look at the rest of the forecast coming

5:42 am

up. for now, let's head over to mike with a look at the morning commute. well, we have kind of a similar situation with cars right. bigger volume pushing in toward an area with less space. we had debris coming westbound highway four right around bailey. and so folks were constricted for a short period of time. looks like everything cleared there. subtle recovery for bailey because it happened at the same time that coming into pittsburgh, we had slowing for westbound highway four up to about railroad, which then can cut down here to kirker pass road, as well as bailey heading down in toward the walnut creek interchange. now everything actually looks like it's recovering as it's building. that's why we still see that red over there. no problems here for highway 37. just more traffic volume. a little slowing approaching. san quentin for west 580 across that richmond bridge into san rafael. we do have some debris or a disabled vehicle that will be clearing shortly. but you see, slowing down the decline, getting into san francisco for the bay bridge, that indicates the need for the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights to be turned on. and that's no surprise here. also no surprise because this is

5:43 am

the third night it's happening. posi two will be closed, so we're looking ahead again, telling folks from alameda into downtown oakland can't use that tube tonight after 9:00. so you'll use these bridges just a bit to the south. this is the last of the three nights scheduled maintenance through the area, again from alameda into oakland. we're looking at a smooth drive in oakland at the arena. there is a concert tonight. chris brown will be there. and then in the south bay. bigger concern here. there may be more crowds because it's paypal park earthquakes versus la. so there will be some local competition statewide going down there. and we have the typical slowing for northbound 101. but watch. 238 237 i'm sorry, down in the south bay for more traffic as well. back to you. well, next on today in the bay. new polling with numbers that really count show a dead heat between kamala harris and donald trump. plus the way artificial intelligence imported from silicon valley to paris is being used at the olympic games. much more news ahead. you're wa in wt

creek, we can see the clouds overhead as the sun tries to peek through. it's going to be clearing out as we go throughout the morning, and temperatures in the low 60s to start reaching into the upper 80s here. it will be a touch warmer compared to yesterday, but more heat is ahead. we'll take a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast coming up, and the bay bridge toll plaza moves very smoothly, but more traffic, of

5:47 am

course, is ahead as well. now this is about the time when we would see those metering lights turned on. we saw the slowing approaching san francisco coming off of westbound 80, but i don't see the metering lights registered on just yet. there will be a bill i'm sure it will be just another minute or so. so come back and check. well, developing while you are sleeping a dramatic escalation of tensions in the middle east and the surprise airstrike taking out hamas's top political leader. this happened in tehran. that's where ismail haniyeh was killed. after attending an inauguration ceremony for iran's new president. israel is not commenting, but iran's supreme leader is already vowing revenge against israel. now this all comes just one day after israeli airstrike in beirut killed hezbollah's most senior military commander. the israeli military is now laying out significance of that strike, calling him the right hand man to hezbollah's leader for shuker was the commander responsible for the

5:48 am

majdal shams massacre, in which 12 children were murdered after hezbollah fired an iranian falaq one rocket directly at a soccer field in northern israel on saturday evening. hezbollah is still denying any role in that weekend airstrike. the white house is not commenting on either incident. other than expressing hope for diplomatic solution. 548 right now, the race for the white house is getting tighter. the most recent polls show a dead heat in battleground state scott mcgrew. these are the most really important numbers. yeah, they really are. i mean, you often hear me say, when we examine nationwide polls, they don't matter because we don't elect a president with the national vote. if we did al gore and hillary clinton would be president at one point. we elect state by state and with the electoral college, the race to 270 pollsters count on california going blue, texas going red. so it's states like

5:49 am

michigan, arizona, nevada, pennsylvania, georgia that decide this race and take a look at this, the latest poll from bloomberg looking at the battleground states shows a dead heat. harris 48% of the vote. when you total up the battleground states. trump 47. that's a tie because the margin of error is 1%. as well. in arizona, harris leads trump by two points after coming from behind in recent days. arizona, home to senator mark kelly, who many suspect harris will choose as her vice presidential pick. the campaign says we'll know no later than next tuesday. here's georgia. absolute dead tie. both candidates 47%. harris rallied in georgia yesterday to huge crowds at the georgia state university in atlanta. former president trump reacted to this scene on his truth social,

5:50 am

saying harris fans started leaving five minutes after she started speaking. harris, for her part, double dog dared trump to show up to the next presidential debate. well, donald. i do hope you'll reconsider to meet me on the debate stage. because, as the saying goes, if you've got something to say, say it to my face. trump will speak today with black journalists in chicago. other news the head of the 2025 project says he'll step down, saying his work is done. project 2025. a 900 page agenda written by conservatives spelling out priorities for trump. trump has been distancing himself from that plan. trump's pick for vice president j.d.

5:51 am

vance spoke in nevada, calling harris a disloyal american. i'll ask you a simple question do we want open borders? no do we want to bankrupt medicare by giving it to illegal aliens? do you want to defund the police? do you want to ban fracking? so do we want kamala harris? hell no. now for what it's worth, any democrat who wanted to challenge harris had until yesterday to speak up. nobody did. harris already had enough committed delegates that we've been calling her the presumptive democratic candidate. laura very interesting. thank you. scott. 551 right now. now to a live look at the olympic cauldron burning in the tuileries garden. the world's best athletes aren't the only performers at the olympics. you may have seen this artificial intelligence is also performing. imported to paris from silicon valley. among the companies working with the ai during the games is intel, the

5:52 am

santa clara company tells us that ai is being used to help coaches train, and actually track athletes, but it also creates a massive database for highlights so anyone can see how their specific athletes did, even if it's not on tv now, i will be able to get highlights showing my players because it's possible to roll this out on all teams so everybody gets the feeling of equal representation. some of the ai powered technology, like the ones used to map out the inside of olympic venues, is already used back home for example, helping visually impaired people get through bart stations. go well training for you this morning. history made in paris as the u.s. women's rugby team accomplished a first and did so in the most dramatic way possible, ramsey, cedric spiff, cedric's away. cedric up over

5:53 am

the 50, the 40. she's going to take it all the way. cedric for the u. s a and that's lied. all right, so rugby seven squad had to score a try to tie the match as time expired going coast to coast. now with the conversion there they defeated australia for their first ever olympics medal this morning the whole team appeared on the today show. here is team captain talking about the very end. it's okay to not have belief to be scared, to be nervous, anxious before a game. and those thoughts are going to be there. but it's like how we play, how we take actions. because we got down here, we were down by five and we only had, you know, seconds left. but we stay connected, knew we weren't going to lose. we just kept with it and for her to pull off that play and to beat some of the best tacklers in the game and we were just all chasing. it was so exciting. mayor there, by the way, is becoming a viral trend of her own right now, with postings on

5:54 am

instagram and tiktok. many of those postings are focused on body positivity. she's generating such a following that she recently passed the 1 million followers on instagram. you could just feel their elation. it was wonderful and the agony of defeat. well, for our coverage from paris, of course it is continuing all morning long. jessica aguirre is going to join us live from paris at the top of the hour, so make sure to stick around for that. she's had lots of great things and some surprises for us. all right, let's talk about the forecast right here at home. carry this temperature is going to start creeping up just a little bit more today. so you're going to start to feel that warmer air for the afternoon. but as we take a look at our air quality that's going to be another issue as we start to see high pressure moving again. and weaker winds, we're not going to see the pollutants in that wildfire smoke really mixing out like we have in the past couple of days. so we are on track for some moderate air quality for this afternoon. and also going to see the sky clearing as our

5:55 am

temperatures warm up just a bit. now yesterday in san jose, we saw the high temperature top out in the upper 70s, but today it will be in the low 80s and will reach that high temperature right at about 4:00 this afternoon. as we get a closer look at the south county, temperatures will range from 82 in milpitas to 92 in morgan hill and we'll see a few more low 90s in the inland east bay with antioch and concord reaching that 90 degree mark in livermore. we should stay just below that, but it will be a warmer day. oakland today, reaching into the mid 70s 60s along the coast, while redwood city will top out at 80 degrees and upper 60s in san francisco. breezy winds and a lot of low clouds and fog. but clearing in the north bay as napa heads for 88 degrees and it will be 89 in sonoma. as we approach the end of the week into the weekend, not only will warmer temperatures arrive, but so too will the humidity. we're going to have a surge of some tropical moisture moving into the bay area. it doesn't look like it will have much of an impact on

5:56 am

us with the exception of the mugginess that we'll feel. but there also will be the potential of some thunderstorms and some lightning over the sierra. so we'll be watching that as we take a look at our temperatures heating up into the 90s, extending into early next week. mike you're looking at the bridge in san rafael. that's right. heading over from the richmond side, we see a volume increase. so more cars heading across the span. a little concern because as i showed you, there is some slowing. there's more slowing now, more volume because this car still hasn't cleared a flat tire. someone has to fix that tire or get help getting off of the roadway and then get that tire fixed. so that is a concern. as we're looking west across that bridge, everything else looks pretty standard. the direction and locations of your slowing, including san jose's build on 101. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. happening now. covid rates in california once again rising, the state's positivity rate hovering around 14%. it's the second highest summer surge in history. recent data up to last week saw california's positivity rate

5:57 am

jumped 2%. a covid is currently being blamed for less than 2% of the deaths in the state. an east bay factory, which is known for producing some nostalgic candy, is shutting down. all new at 6:00 on today in the bay. the reason the historic factory is calling it quits after decades of business in the east bay. but this is all about the team. plus, team usa taking gold. we're going to take you live to paris with more on the medals on the line today and a look at the local athletes set to compete
