It was good to feel the sand back between the toes on this holiday back in the UAE last year. I realise there is some LinkedIn chatter about the site turning more into Facebook than its networking origins intended, but I am easing my way back in, and there will be more purpose when September comes round, I promise. A friend, helpfully role-playing a potential future employer recently challenged me, "So what sets you apart from all these other applicants?" It often translates nowadays into the ‘what’s your superpower?’ question.Over the course of my career, I've worked in nearly every team and unit within the Compliance function imaginable: - from sat in the middle of businesses, helping, challenging and guiding; to- setting up new desks, entities and even country presences, end-to-end with regulatory and licence applications and embedded enterprise risk frameworks; to- lamp-in-the-face inspections and investigations from the authorities; to- writing policies and designing control frameworks from scratch and then driving implementation locally/globally; to- testing, assuring and monitoring that all that is working effectively; to- Playing a decisive and purposeful role heading/around Management and Risk committee tables of all shapes and sizes; to- leading and managing teams of diverse sizes, backgrounds and experiences, as a hands-on, empathetic, player-coach. I’ve done that across most products and client segments in financial services, and in most locations you can think of, given the geographical exposure Standard Chartered and Bear Stearns gave me over the last two decades.BUT, are those superpowers? No. Lots of you will have done/are doing lots of that. My REAL superpowers… the things almost no-one can do better than me on the planet: Weaning that one on the left off Pokemon cards, and onto football stickers, to EVERYONE’S relief; andAs a baby, getting that one on the right, a terrible sleeper, to nod off each night AND transition him from arms to cot seamlessly However, all that important stuff earlier might also be exactly what you're looking for to assist and grow your businesses and teams. If so, give me a follow, and drop me a message. Let’s chat. Now if I can just get that one on the left riding a bike before summer holidays, I will be ready for The Avengers!

Mr Phebey is somewhat modest in his assessment of his Superpowers. He has the unique ability to straddle Risk, Client Satisfaction, Commercial Viability and Improvement whilst keeping Control Managers, Peers, Stakeholders and Clients informed and happy.Networking is ultimately a relationship understanding your business partners – this includes sharing the love of sand between toes

A rare sighting, a warning so closely attached to the hazard! Unlike at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, where I steered a wide path around these little guys (I could hear mum and dad crashing around in the undergrowth), as Bankers and Financial Services professionals, it can often feel that the warning - the regulation or law - is distant from the reality of the hazard - the risk.In my 20+ years helping my employers and clients navigate governance, risk, and control, I've seen enough to know that regulators and legislators rarely get the big things wrong. The risk is out there, lurking. The key is to be aware of how it might manifest, identify it, and right-size the response to that threat according to your business model. That calibration, avoiding either overcorrection when horizon-scanning or failure to notice until it is too late to realise that risk, is both the art and the science. I've seen first-hand at very senior levels how important it is to be proactive rather than reactive to such threats and to warnings introduced to eliminate them. Whether building group, regional, and country teams in Compliance, the Business, and the COO function, managing GRC across diverse markets, or acting as Risk-owner or process owner, the importance of interpretation, deep commercial understanding, and appropriate response has always been my preferred method of execution. As of September, I hope to continue providing valuable perspectives and action on better integrating sound governance and prudent risk management and driving positive control outcomes based on the spirit and letter of the obligations into the daily operations of financial services and corporate institutions. If that interests you, or you need some help, please drop me a line, and we can talk!Until then, please tread carefully in Bukit Timah's badlands —it won't always be this obvious!

This is the Phebey family in Hoi An. The floating candles represent a wish each of us made. After years of mostly passive observation, I am excited to transition into a more active role here on LinkedIn. My journey began as an embattled Compliance Officer in the UK, seeking an overseas quest after the early throes of the Financial Crisis. With Julie, my then-girlfriend (now wife), we embarked on an adventure that has spanned sixteen years and most continents.I have lived an incredible decade and a half with Standard Chartered Bank. I've carried out various roles, positively impacting most countries and living in a few. My children are SC babies, one born in Dubai and the other in Singapore. I got married while at the Bank. It's been most of my professional life and a material chunk of my personal one, too. Work has taught me to lead wonderfully diverse small and huge teams. I can't think of a macroeconomic crisis or significant commercial opportunity that I haven't piloted with the Bank. My deep curiosity and fascination with the financial services industry have driven this. I will be leaving Standard Chartered, finishing at the end of August. This is daunting, but that emotion is overpowered by the excitement of the next stage we have decided to explore as a family. I thank all my friends and colleagues at the Bank, present and past, for all their help, partnership, education, thrills, spills, and laughter, which have contributed to the Banker, father, leader (and Governance, Risk, and Compliance Officer!) I am today. So farewell to SC, and hello to the next stage, which I hope to share with my network soon. Until then, expect to see me taking the uncomfortable step (for me) in being more present here, sharing content, learning from you all, deepening my network, and keeping my edge sharp.Give me a 'follow'!I'm not going to share what the wish was, but fingers crossed it can come true soon, and here's to new beginnings and making meaningful connections.

I will save my professional mentors for another day, but Richard nailed this and caused me to reflect. I under-appreciated it at the time, but the conviction, coaxing, encouragement, challenge and commitment that my old form master and cricket coach Phillip Powell (Mr Powell) showed to me in my teens sticks with me and definitely formed part of who I am and aspire to be as a leader/manager today. He is the very first teacher that comes to mind as I reflect on school, among a cast of characters. I will dig out my reports next time I’m in the loft at my parent’s place. Thanks for the prompt Richard!
